With telecommunications networks and data centers growing ever larger and more complex, there is an increased need for real-time, remote power system monitoring and maintenance to ensure uptime. OmniOn Power is helping to meet this need with its new Intelligent Distribution Bay, a secondary DC power distribution cabinet that features individual branch circuit monitoring for up to 160 individual circuits.

The latest addition to OmniOn’s battery distribution fuse bay (BDFB) and battery distribution circuit breaker bay (BDCBB) product family, the Intelligent Distribution Bay with battery backup takes -48V DC power from a primary source and allows it to be subdivided for use for multiple loads, each with its own intelligent protective device that can be monitored in real time. This provides increased visibility into system performance as well as reduced maintenance costs and improved uptime.

The Intelligent Distribution Bay enables lower upfront investments by incorporating intelligent monitoring features into each individual circuit breaker rather than the entire cabinet. It also allows for power system scalability, with flexible configurations of up to eight 800-amp load panels with 20 circuits per panel to help customers easily expand their system to meet their future needs. The panels in the distribution bay can be configured in A/B panel pairs or multiple A/B panels for redundant systems, depending on individual customer needs.

“Perhaps the greatest benefit of our new Intelligent Distribution Bay is the ability to remotely monitor up to 160 individual or grouped current loads,” said Vito Savino, data center and wireline segment leader for OmniOn Power. “There’s a market demand for remote load monitoring and network access on each individual circuit, and our new Intelligent Distribution Bay provides visibility into system performance that can help reduce operating and maintenance costs and allow for proactive planning for predictive maintenance to improve reliability and performance.”

With individual branch circuit monitoring, each circuit can be monitored and provide status updates for items including on/off status; tripped circuits; breaker ampacity, current, size and temperature; health status of the circuit; the number of underload and overload conditions; and breaker serial number and manufactured date. OmniOn’s new distribution bays feature the company’s intelligent Pulsar 100 controller, which allows for the configuration of individual load alarm thresholds. Monitoring load performance can help improve efficiency and resource management.

The distribution bay is designed to complement larger DC power systems, such as OmniOn’s GPS4848 and GPS4830, and is intended to be used as part of a comprehensive infrastructure management system. The fully configurable cabinets feature a compact footprint that starts at 7 feet tall by 24 inches deep by 30 inches wide, making them well suited for use in medium-to-large telecom and data center installations.
